What is Maui Wowie?

A cannabis strain from Hawaii: Leafly calls it a classic sativa with tropical flavors, and Weedmaps says growers around Hāna, on Maui, produced it in the 1970s.1,2 It is also the title of a 2008 Kid Cudi song written as a tribute to the strain.3

What does Maui Wowie mean?

It is the name of the strain, and the name points to Maui, the island where Weedmaps says it was grown in the 1970s.2 Leafly’s history of surf culture says early growers named their strains after growing regions and that Nāhiku Maui is “today known as Maui Wowie”, adding that the origin of the name is still debated; Wikipedia’s list of cannabis slang also records “Maui-wowie” as a nickname for cannabis in general.4,5

Is Maui Wowie a drug?

It is a strain of cannabis: Leafly lists it as a sativa, and Kid Cudi’s song of the same name is a tribute to it.1,3 In Hawaii, where it comes from, medical cannabis has been legal since 2000, while adult-use cannabis is still illegal.6

Is Maui Waui the same as Maui Wowie?

Yes. Leafly, Weedmaps and AllBud list Maui Waui as another name for Maui Wowie, Leafly and Weedmaps add Mowie Wowie, and Wikipedia’s list of cannabis names records Maui Waui as an industry trade name for the strain.1,2,7,8 In our lab data, 139 of the 190 matched tests are labelled “Maui Waui”, including all 124 from Maryland.9

Is Maui Wowie indica or sativa?

A sativa in most accounts: Leafly calls it one and rates it mostly energizing, AllBud lists 80% sativa, and seed sellers call their versions mostly sativa.1,7,10 Weedmaps lists it as a hybrid.2

What strain is Maui Wowie?

A Hawaiian strain whose parents are not documented: Leafly lists Hawaiian crossed with an unknown strain, Weedmaps lists a Jamaican landrace, and seed banks sell it as a Hawaiian landrace bred true; Weedmaps says its exact genetic origin has been lost.1,2,10,11

How much THC is in Maui Wowie?

The median is 18.18% across 190 state lab tests; half of all results fall between 16.50% and 19.65%.9 Leafly lists 19%, Weedmaps 16–24% and AllBud 20–28%.1,2,7

What does Maui Wowie taste like?

Mostly pineapple and tropical fruit: on Weedmaps, 39% of flavor reports say pineapple, 34% tropical and 27% sweet, and Leafly lists tropical, pineapple and citrus.1,2

What terpenes are in Maui Wowie?

Our lab data cannot say: only 9 of 190 tests report individual terpenes.9 Leafly lists myrcene, pinene and caryophyllene, and two seed sellers list terpinolene, myrcene and caryophyllene for their versions.1,10,12

Does Maui Wowie have CBD?

Almost none: 139 of the 180 tests that reported CBD found none, and 1 reached 1% or more.9

Is Maui Wowie energizing or relaxing?

Energizing, in the reports we found: Leafly rates it mostly energizing, with energetic, uplifted and happy as its top reported effects, and lists it among the best strains for feeling energetic; AllBud calls it a day and morning strain.1,7,13

What is Cherry Maui Wowie?

A different strain: a hybrid cross of Cherry Pie and Maui Wowie from the brand Rythm, also called CMW, per Leafly.14 In our lab data, results labelled “Cherry Maui Wowie” (11) and “Maui Wowie x Cherry Pie” (24) are excluded from Maui Wowie’s count.9

What is the song “Maui Wowie” about?

The strain. Wikipedia describes Kid Cudi’s song, from the mixtape A Kid Named Cudi released on July 17, 2008, as a tribute to the cannabis strain from Hawaii that it is named after, and a Leafly writer says the song was inspired by the strain.3,15 A TikTok trend revived it in September 2025, and it reached No. 71 on the Billboard Hot 100.3

How long does Maui Wowie take to flower?

About 7–9 weeks according to Leafly’s strain page and 9–11 weeks according to Weedmaps and Leafly’s grow guide; seed lines list 63–77 days (Homegrown Cannabis Co.) up to 10–15 weeks (The Landrace Team).1,2,11,12,16
