Is Maui Wowie indica or sativa? Its genetics and lineage

Maui Wowie is a sativa-leaning strain from Hawaii whose parents are not documented: Leafly lists Hawaiian and an unknown strain, Weedmaps lists a Jamaican landrace, and seed banks sell it as a Hawaiian landrace bred true from Maui stock.1,2,3,4 Weedmaps says its exact genetic origin “has been lost to history”.2

The parents, as far as anyone says

Leafly describes Maui Wowie as a classic sativa made from a cross of Hawaiian and a strain that remains unknown, and its list of the 100 best strains gives Hawaiian as the parent.1,11 Leafly’s own Hawaiian page describes a sativa with a tropical-fruit aroma but lists Pineapple Express × Amnesia Haze as its parents, while Leafly’s Pineapple Express page names Hawaiian as a parent of Pineapple Express; we use the Hawaiian page only for its description.12,13

Weedmaps treats Hawaiian as a family rather than one plant: a wide variety of landraces from different islands, among them Maui Wowie, Kona Gold from the Big Island and Kauai Electric from Kauai.14

Leafly’s history of surf culture reports that Laguna Beach surfers sailed to Maui in 1970 with seeds from Mexico, but it does not link those seeds to Maui Wowie.19 We describe the parents as “Hawaiian × an unknown strain, per Leafly” and name the other accounts beside it.

How sativa is it?

Most sources call it a sativa: Leafly does, and rates it mostly energizing; AllBud lists a sativa-dominant hybrid, 80% sativa and 20% indica; and Seed Supreme, Homegrown Cannabis Co. and Souljah Seeds call their versions mostly sativa.1,3,16,18,20 Weedmaps lists it as a hybrid, and Blim Burn Seeds describes its version as a sativa-dominant hybrid.2,17

The east Maui line

Three sources point to the same corner of east Maui: Weedmaps credits growers around Hāna, Leafly’s surf-culture history says the strain once called Nāhiku Maui is today known as Maui Wowie, and Pua Mana Pakalolo, a Hawaiian seed bank, says its seed line came from a grower in Lower Nāhiku, in Hāna, and carries the strain’s genetics from the 1960s and 1970s.2,19,21 Leafly lists two crosses made from that line, Maui Mango Diesel and Maui Pineapple Chunk.7,8

One name, several seed lines

SeedFinder lists four breeders’ versions under Maui Wowie and three under Maui Waui, and its entry for the original, credited to an unknown or legendary breeder, records 54 strains bred from it.22,23,24 Every breeder below describes Hawaiian stock except ILGM, which gives no parents; the lines differ in seed type and flowering time (see grow).3,4,16,17,18,21

What our lab data adds

Our strict name matching excluded 126 results across all product types (40 of them flower) sold under near-miss names, led by “Maui Wowie x Cherry Pie” (24) and “Cherry Maui Wowie” (11).26 Leafly lists Cherry Maui Wowie as a separate hybrid, Cherry Pie × Maui Wowie, from the brand Rythm.6 Labels vary in spelling: 139 of the 190 matched tests are labelled “Maui Waui”, including all 124 from Maryland, and strict matching counts Maui Waui, Maui Wowee and Maui Wauie as Maui Wowie.26 Because the matcher reads a bare number as a lot code, 5 results with numbered labels such as “Maui Wowie #8” are inside the 190, all from Hawaii.26
